AustraliaNingaloo camping: How the monthly drop system works
Daniel Thareja
Founder
Ningaloo Coast camping bookings changed in 2026. Instead of the old midnight rolling release — where sites appeared one at a time, 180 days ahead — WA Parks now drops an entire month of availability in a single release. If you don't know the new system, you'll miss it entirely.
For a full breakdown of how WA's booking system compares to other states, see our state-by-state guide to Australian camping bookings.
How the monthly drop works
Since February 2026, DBCA has been trialling a new monthly block release for all Ningaloo Coast campgrounds.
Here's how it works:
- When: First Tuesday of each month at 10am AWST
- What: A full month of availability, six months ahead
- Where: All 36 Ningaloo Coast campgrounds across three parks
- How: Through Explore Parks WA
So the June drop (first Tuesday in June) releases all of December. The July drop releases all of January. One day per month, during business hours.
The old system released sites at midnight on a rolling basis. Campers set alarms, refreshed at 12:00am, and raced to grab sites the second they appeared. The monthly block system replaced that with a single, predictable release during the day.
The trial was introduced to make access fairer. DBCA reviews it periodically and extended it past the original three-month review window in April 2026. The system is still labelled a trial as of May 2026 — DBCA has not announced permanent adoption. Check the Ningaloo camping trial May 2026 update for the latest status.
Standard WA campgrounds outside Ningaloo still use the 180-day rolling window. The monthly drop only applies to the Ningaloo Coast.
Which campgrounds are included
The monthly drop covers 36 campgrounds across three areas:
Cape Range National Park (10 campgrounds): Osprey Bay, Mesa, Tulki Beach, Kurrajong, Neds, North Mandu, Bungarra, Boat Harbour, One K, Yardie Creek.
Nyinggulara National Park (5 campgrounds, currently closed for cyclone repairs as of May 2026): South Lefroy Bay, Winderabandi, Janes Bay, Point Billie, North Lefroy. Check DBCA's status pages before assuming these sites are bookable for your dates.
Nyinggulu Coastal Reserves / Warroora Coast (11+ campgrounds): 14 Mile, Amherst Point, Black Moon Cliff, Elles Beach, Lagoon, Maggies, Nicks Camp, Sandy Point, Stans Camp, Stevens Camp, The Ridge, and others.
Cape Range has the most infrastructure — pit toilets, fire rings, and basic shade shelters at most sites. Fees are around $15 per adult per night (basic facilities tier). Park entry for Cape Range is a separate $17 per vehicle per day.
The Warroora Coast campgrounds are more remote and basic. Some are beach-access only. Fees vary by facilities.
Which campgrounds sell out first
DBCA's official FAQ names three campgrounds as the highest-demand sites across the entire Ningaloo Coast:
Osprey Bay — 46 unpowered sites right on the beach overlooking the reef. The most popular campground at Ningaloo and consistently among the first to sell out on drop day.
South Lefroy Bay — Beachfront sites on the Ningaloo coast, inside Nyinggulara National Park. High demand, limited capacity. (Currently closed for cyclone repairs.)
Winderabandi — Another Nyinggulara NP beachfront campground that sells out alongside South Lefroy in normal conditions. (Currently closed for cyclone repairs.)
While Nyinggulara NP sites are out of action, the Cape Range NP campgrounds and Warroora Coast reserves are absorbing the displaced demand — expect Osprey Bay, Mesa, and Tulki Beach to clear faster than usual.
After those three, Mesa (23 sites) and Tulki Beach (11 sites) in Cape Range are the next to go. Kurrajong (35 sites) is larger and lasts slightly longer, but still books out for peak-season months.
Peak season at Ningaloo runs April through October — the dry season, with warm days, cooler nights, and whale shark season from April through July. If you're targeting a winter school holiday trip (July), that month's drop will be competitive.
What to do if you miss the drop
If your target month sold out on drop day, cancellations are your best option.
DBCA's cancellation policy for Ningaloo campgrounds:
- Within 48 hours of booking (if booked 3+ days in advance): no fee
- 14+ days before arrival (peak season): no fee
- Less than 14 days before arrival: cancellation fee applies (one concession camper fee per site per night removed)
The 48-hour grace period after booking is the first cancellation window. Campers who grabbed multiple campgrounds on drop day start releasing the extras within a day or two.
The second window is around 14 days before each arrival date. That's when the fee kicks in, and people who held sites "just in case" decide whether to keep them.
DBCA has no waitlist. Cancelled sites reappear on Explore Parks WA for whoever happens to be checking. No notification.
Schnerp monitors WA Parks bookings for Osprey Bay and other Ningaloo campgrounds. You tell us your dates, and we scan for cancellations. When a site opens up, you get an alert so you can book it before someone else does.
