Royal National Park camping booking: a Bonnie Vale guide

Camping in Royal National Park must be booked before you arrive. For most campers who want to drive in, the practical choice is Bonnie Vale campground near Bundeena. Book it through the NSW National Parks Bonnie Vale page.

Bonnie Vale has 79 marked campsites, including powered and unpowered options for tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. If your weekend is booked out, keep the campground's availability calendar handy. Cancelled sites can return at any time, and the NSW refund rules give you two useful dates to watch.

NSW National Parks requires online bookings for its campgrounds. Open Bonnie Vale's official page, select Search availability, enter your dates and party size, then compare the available site types. You pay in full when you book.

The system lets you book up to 18 people or three sites online. Larger groups need to send a group booking enquiry. Park entry is separate from the camping charge, so include that in your trip budget.

There isn't a ballot or one annual opening day listed for Bonnie Vale. NPWS also doesn't state a fixed public release interval on the campground page. Use the live calendar as the source of truth for the dates currently on sale.

Bonnie Vale is a drive-in campground with marked powered and unpowered sites. It accepts tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans. The official campground map is worth opening beside the booking calendar because it shows the site layout, amenity blocks and shoreline.

There is one vehicle space per site. If you're bringing a caravan or camper trailer, match the equipment and vehicle details to the site description rather than booking the first green square you see.

The campground has flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, free gas or electric barbecues and picnic tables. Pets aren't allowed, apart from certified assistance animals. NSW national parks are also smoke-free.

what to do when your dates are booked out

A full calendar isn't final. A cancelled campsite can go back into the booking system for the next person to take. Bonnie Vale's page has no waitlist promise, so I would keep one or two backup weekends ready and check those exact date ranges rather than searching the whole season each time.

NSW's current camping refund rules create two decision points:

• Cancel 31 days or more before arrival and the refund is 75%, excluding the booking fee.
• Cancel 0 to 30 days before arrival and the refund is 50%, excluding the booking fee.

Those thresholds don't prove when other campers will cancel. They do tell you when their refund changes. I would increase checks around 31 days before your preferred weekend, then keep checking close to arrival for weather or plan changes. That is a recommendation based on the policy, not a promise that sites will appear.

Bookings can be transferred to another date within the same property and site type when the booking window permits. The whole booking must move together. A transfer won't necessarily create a vacancy, so the live calendar still matters.

Bonnie Vale and The Basin at Ku-ring-gai use the same NSW booking and refund framework, but the trip logistics differ. Bonnie Vale lets you camp beside your vehicle. The Basin requires a ferry or a steep walk.

getting there and checking in

Bonnie Vale is at 2 Sea Breeze Lane near Bundeena. You can drive there in a 2WD vehicle on sealed roads. If you're travelling without a car, take the ferry from Cronulla to Bundeena Wharf, then walk about 15 minutes to the Bonnie Vale picnic area.

Check-in is 2pm and check-out is 10am. Royal National Park is generally open from 7am to 8.30pm, although weather, fire danger and operational work can close areas. Read the campground's local alerts shortly before leaving.

The current park entry fee is $12 per vehicle per day and isn't included in the camping fee. Pay at an entry station, visitor centre, pay machine or through Park'nPay.
