Mueller Hut: NZ's most popular alpine hut booking guide

Mueller Hut sits at 1,850m on the Sealy Range with a direct view of Aoraki/Mount Cook. It has 28 bunks and it's one of the hardest DOC huts to book outside the Great Walks. Bookings for the 2026-27 season open on Tuesday 12 May 2026 at noon.

What is Mueller Hut?

Mueller Hut is a DOC alpine serviced hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. It's reached via the Mueller Hut Route, a steep 5.2 km track gaining about 1,000m elevation from White Horse Hill car park near Mount Cook Village. DOC estimates 4 hours up and 3 hours down.

The hut was opened by Sir Edmund Hillary in 2003. DOC completed its largest maintenance overhaul in 20 years in March 2026, upgrading the cladding, windows, water tanks, and gas system.

Two bunkrooms of 14 each. Mattresses provided. Gas cookers, running water (non-treated, so bring purification), solar lighting, and an outdoor long-drop toilet. A summer warden runs a daily radio check-in and weather update at 6:45pm.

The draw is the view. Sunrise turns Aoraki pink. The hut is inside the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve, so clear nights are good for stargazing. A 30-minute scramble from the hut reaches Mt Ollivier, the first peak Edmund Hillary climbed.

Mueller Hut is not a Great Walk hut. This matters for booking.

How Mueller Hut bookings work

Mueller Hut bookings go through DOC's online booking system. Because it's not a Great Walk, it opens with the general huts and lodges release, not with the individual Great Walk dates.

For the 2026-27 season, Mueller Hut bookings open at 12 noon on Tuesday 12 May 2026. This is the same day as non-Great Walk huts and lodges across the country. The Great Walks open later that week.

DOC confirmed this in their March 2026 media release.

The booking covers stays from 9 November 2026 through 27 April 2027. Outside that window (May through early November), the hut is first-come, first-served with no advance booking. Winter access requires alpine experience, ice axes, and crampons.

These are 2025-26 rates. There's no NZ resident vs international pricing split for Mueller Hut. Backcountry hut passes are not valid here. You can book online or by phone, but phone bookings have a $10 service fee.

When to book

The 28 bunks fill fast for summer weekends. Friday and Saturday nights in December through February are the hardest to get. Midweek nights are easier. March and April have fewer crowds and more stable weather.

If you're booking Mueller Hut alongside a Great Walk, plan your timing. Mueller Hut opens at noon on May 12. The Milford Track opens May 13 and the Routeburn Track opens May 15. Book Mueller Hut first, then join the Great Walk queues on their respective days.

What to do if Mueller Hut is sold out

DOC's cancellation policy for non-Great Walk huts creates predictable windows:

• Cancelled next day, 2+ days before arrival: no fee
• After 48 hours, 15+ days before arrival: 10% fee
• 14-4 days before arrival: 20% fee
• 3 days to day before: 30% fee
• Day of arrival or no-show: 100% forfeit

The zero-fee window right after booking is where most cancellations happen. People book several dates on opening day, then drop the ones they don't need. A second wave comes around the 15-day mark as the fee jumps from 10% to 20%.

DOC has no waitlist. Cancelled bunks reappear on DOC's booking system for whoever happens to be checking. No notification.
