Mueller Hut booking guide: Aoraki/Mount Cook's alpine hut

Mueller Hut sits at 1,850m on the Sealy Range with a direct view of Aoraki/Mount Cook. It has 28 bunks, and DOC names it among the places outside the Great Walks that regularly book out over peak periods. Bookings for the 2026-27 season opened on Tuesday 12 May 2026 at noon, for stays from 2 November 2026 to 2 May 2027.

What kind of hut is Mueller Hut?

Mueller Hut is a DOC alpine serviced hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. It's reached via the Mueller Hut Route, a steep 5.2 km track gaining about 1,000m elevation from White Horse Hill car park near Mount Cook Village. DOC estimates 4 hours up and 3 hours down.

The hut was opened by Sir Edmund Hillary in 2003. DOC completed its largest maintenance overhaul in 20 years in March 2026, upgrading the cladding, windows, water tanks, and gas system.

The 28 platform bunks are split across separate bunkrooms. Mattresses provided. Gas cookers, running water (non-treated, so bring purification), solar lighting, and an outdoor long-drop toilet. Volunteer wardens stay at the hut over summer, and there's a daily radio check-in and weather update at 4:45pm.

The draw is the view. Sunrise turns Aoraki pink. DOC calls the national park one of the best places in New Zealand to see the night sky, so clear nights are good for stargazing. A 30-minute scramble from the hut reaches Mt Ollivier, the first peak Edmund Hillary climbed.

Mueller Hut is not a Great Walk hut. This matters for booking.

How Mueller Hut bookings work

Mueller Hut bookings go through DOC's online booking system. Because it's not a Great Walk, it opens with the general huts and lodges release, not with the individual Great Walk dates.

For the 2026-27 season, Mueller Hut bookings opened at 12 noon on Tuesday 12 May 2026. This was the same day as non-Great Walk huts and lodges across the country. Most Great Walks opened later that week or the next. DOC hasn't announced the 2027-28 opening date yet.

DOC confirmed the 12 May date in their March 2026 media release.

The booking covers stays from 2 November 2026 through 2 May 2027. That's wider than the 9 November to 27 April window DOC listed when bookings opened in May. Outside that window (May through early November), the hut is first-come, first-served with no advance booking. You get a hut ticket on the day at the Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park Visitor Centre. Winter access requires alpine experience, ice axes, crampons, and avalanche gear.

NZAC members pay NZ$40 a night. Children (5-17) pay half the adult rate: NZ$30 or NZ$31 in December to February, NZ$27.50 or NZ$28.50 in the other booking months. Under 5s are free.

These are the rates DOC listed in September 2026. There's no NZ resident vs international pricing split for Mueller Hut. Backcountry hut passes are not valid here. You can book online or by phone, but phone and visitor centre bookings have a $10 service fee.

When to book

The 28 bunks fill fast for summer weekends. Friday and Saturday nights in December through February are the hardest to get. Midweek nights are easier. DOC's pricing points the same way: weekend nights and December to February cost the most. March and April are quieter, but DOC warns that snow and ice can arrive from March.

If you're booking Mueller Hut alongside a Great Walk, plan your timing. In 2026, Mueller Hut opened at noon on May 12, the Milford Track opened May 13 and the Routeburn Track opened May 15. If DOC keeps that order next year, book Mueller Hut first, then join the Great Walk queues on their respective days.

What to do if Mueller Hut is sold out

DOC's cancellation policy for non-Great Walk huts creates predictable windows:

• Cancelled next day, 2+ days before arrival: no fee
• After 48 hours, 15+ days before arrival: 10% fee
• 14-4 days before arrival: 20% fee
• 3 days to day before: 30% fee
• Day of arrival or no-show: 100% forfeit

I'd expect the zero-fee window right after booking to be the busiest. People book several dates on opening day, then drop the ones they don't need. I'd also check more often in the days before a date hits 14 days out, when the fee jumps from 10% to 20%.

DOC has no waitlist. Cancelled bunks reappear on DOC's booking system for whoever happens to be checking. DOC documents no alert for returned bunks. DOC keeps no bunks for walk-ins during the booking season, but you can book online on the day until 8pm if a bunk is free.
